Working Directly on Film as Material
This hands-on workshop explores cameraless filmmaking — treating film as a tactile surface to work on directly.
Participants will experiment with hand-working techniques on film, including scratching, collaging, tinting, and other material interventions. Using found footage, along with black and clear film leaders, the workshop opens up a playful and experimental approach to moving images, focusing on texture, rhythm, and chance rather than representation.
No cameras, no lenses — just film, light, and physical interaction.
About the CPB Community Darkroom
We are at a pivotal moment in photographic history.
With the rise of AI-generated imagery, the sanctity and materiality of the photograph are being redefined. In response, the CPB Community Darkroom was established as a hub for the practice, research, and revival of analogue photography in all its forms.
The darkroom supports a wide range of interests — from traditional film printing to alternative processes — and welcomes artists, students, and enthusiasts alike.
Our initiatives include:
-
Regular introductory and guided instruction on contact printing and enlargement techniques
-
Research and experimentation in analogue processes.
- Photographic paper and printing chemistry provided for practice prints
-
Use of enlargers, timers, and necessary darkroom tools
-
One final set of fine prints to take home
-
Participation in an impromptu group exhibition on the final day
