Background
The Nikon EM, introduced in 1979, was Nikon’s compact, lightweight SLR designed for amateur photographers. Marketed as a beginner-friendly entry into the Nikon system, the EM featured aperture-priority auto exposure while still using the robust Nikon F-mount.
Lens Compatibility & Format
The Nikon EM uses the Nikon F-mount, giving access to a wide range of Nikon AI and AI-S lenses. The camera accepts standard 35mm film (color or black & white, 24 or 36 exposures).
Usage Notes
The EM is an aperture-priority camera—users select the aperture, and the camera sets the shutter speed automatically. Compact and lightweight, it’s ideal for beginners or as a backup body. The zoom lens adds flexibility for street, travel, and portrait photography.
Condition Description
This copy has been CLAed (Cleaned, Lubricated, Adjusted). However, two issues remain:
-
Shutter seems off at higher speeds (inconsistent timing).
-
ISO dial is jamming, limiting ease of operation.
The body is otherwise functional, and the included lens is in working condition. Due to these faults, it is rated 6/10.
CPB Darkroom Inspection
The camera underwent CLA service, but shutter calibration and ISO dial require further attention. These issues are noted transparently. The lens has been checked for aperture and focus smoothness and is operational.
