Introduced in 1971, the Nikon F2 refined and strengthened the legendary Nikon F system. Featuring a faster maximum shutter speed of 1/2000 sec, improved ergonomics, and enhanced durability, the F2 became the gold standard for professional photojournalism, studio work, and scientific photography throughout the 1970s. Its modular system supports interchangeable prisms, focusing screens, motor drives, and film backs.

The Nikon F2 uses standard 35mm (135) film, producing 24 × 36 mm negatives. Metering is available when paired with compatible Photomic prisms (DP-1, DP-2, DP-3, DP-11, DP-12). The camera is compatible with pre-AI Nikon F-mount lenses, and later AI compatibility depends on the prism used.
